By Jim Lawhon

For quite a while I have heard around town and read in the blogs that the only way Floresville will ever get out of its current mess is if we get fresh ideas on the City Council. Being a member of the council has never been easy; it requires personal sacrifice and a strong constitution to weather the personal attacks that are inevitable. This has always influenced people not to run.

I agree that having fresh ideas on the council would be a great thing. I was born and raised in Floresville and graduated from high school here. My wife and I have been back in town after being away a bit more than 21 years for a U.S. Navy career. I would love to see some of the new people in town enter the upcoming council races and mayoral race. Not because I want to throw out people who have lived here their entire lives, but because I think it would provide great balance to decision-making and leadership for our city. If you lived here all your life, you know the city and the people, which is very important. If you haven’t lived here all your life, you probably have seen different solutions to common problems and are less subject to two bad excuses in decision-making. “We have always done it that way” and “We have never done it that way.”

If my job allowed me the time to properly perform the duties, I would run, but until I retire that is not a possibility. I want to encourage anyone who feels they can bring a fresh perspective to leadership in our city to get to City Hall by Monday, Aug. 18, and file to run for one of the two open council seats or for mayor.

Today is the day. If you have been thinking about running for Mayor or City Council, today is the last day to go to City Hall and file.

Fresh perspectives aka 'outside the beltway' is a common thread in lots of political contests. How's that working out for you ? :-)

Mr. Miller did endure harsh attacks. We can only hope his sacrifices weren't for nothing

Jim, thanks for your service. But outsiders (those outside the clique) don't seem to fair well in Floresville even if by some miracle they get elected. Just ask Jim Miller. The voters in Floresville must like shady, second ... More ›
