Jury finds Janysek not guilty of aggravated assault charge

Jerry Lee Janysek is not guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to an Aug. 6 jury decision delivered in Wilson County District Court. Their vote came just two days after the jury was selected.
The most serious of three charges against the 49-year-old Janysek stemmed from a July 27, 2013, incident in which then-21-year-old Anthony Fish was shot with a .22 caliber rifle at Janysek’s home on F.M. 541 east of Poth. Janysek’s defense attorney, Stephen Barrera, said following the verdict that his client claimed he shot Fish in self-defense when the two were wrestling for the weapon and it went off.
Assistant district attorneys Audrey Louis and Monica Strickland of the 81st Judicial District served as the prosecutorial team on the case. Louis said, “We respect the verdict of the jury.”
Barrera chose to have the jury consider Janysek’s charges separately. He still must stand trial on charges of retaliation against the same victim and possession of less than 1 gram of methamphetamine. As a result, 81st Judicial District Judge Donna S. Rayes returned Janysek to the custody of the Wilson County Jail.
