Bowling alley deal rolls into the gutter

For the foreseeable future, Floresville will not be getting a bowling alley. The Floresville Economic Development Corp. board of directors, at its Aug. 11 meeting, learned that Eric and Lisa Rodriguez will not proceed with the project.

The Rodriguezes asked the FEDC to invoke a provision in the sale contract that allows the corporation to buy back the 2-acre property, which is located in the Lone Oak Business Park near Angelica’s Mexican Restaurant on U.S. 181 in Floresville. FEDC Executive Director Tommy Baker said after the meeting that the board agreed to repurchase the land for $55,000.

The FEDC had sold the Rodriguezes the land in 2012. In June, the corporation signed an agreement with the couple that would pave the way for the bowling alley’s construction. However, Baker said the project would have exceeded the Rodriguezes’ budget by more than $3 million.

Eric Rodriguez said following the meeting that he and his wife were unable to proceed at this time, due to difficulty meeting the deadlines in the FEDC’s agreement, and contractor bids were coming in far higher than previously anticipated.

This is the second bowling alley deal to fall apart for the FEDC. In 2010, the corporation began ill-fated negotiations with an outfit known as the “Jungle Lanes Group” for an entertainment center -- including a bowling alley, skating rink, and arcade -- also proposed for the industrial park.

The board also addressed budget issues for the coming fiscal year. See related article on this page.

I would like to have someone from the Planning Commission explain how they can approve a Hookah, Pookah - smoke JOINT - and not a bowling alley! Oh, I almost forgot, this is Floresville - a city with no class!

What a shame, this could have finally brought something here for family and kids to do. Think about the revenue it could have brought into town. All our money instead goes to San Antonio due to having nothing here in our town.

Than you Character. Eric knows better than to let anyone in his deals. Good luck Eric and Lisa.
