Ben Peeler, whose family owns Texana Feeders, competed in the National High School Finals Rodeo July 13-19 in Rocksprings, Wyo. He followed Wells Mitchell of Stockdale, who competed on the junior high level in breakaway. In addition to representing Wilson County, both share another connection: Wells’ father works with Texana Feeders. See “Stockdale saddle star shines in Iowa,” July 23 Wilson County News.

Ben, the son of Jason and Marianna Peeler, is an upcoming senior at TMI in San Antonio. His sister, Annabeth, is also involved in the rodeo and was named 2014 All-Around Cowgirl in the Region 6 Texas Junior High Rodeo Association.

This marks Ben’s third year to compete in cutting. His summer vacation began with state competition June 6-14 in Abilene.

While representing Region 6, Ben led the way in boys cutting. During state competition, his fourth-place finish qualified him for a return visit to the national finals in Wyoming.

Ben’s first 2014 national performance was July 14. During the Boys Cutting Performance 2, he tied for eighth with a score of 129.

His second performance was July 18, and his score of 136 put him in seventh place. After the combined score was tabulated, Ben was ranked 39th, ending his 2014 season. Only the top 20 cowboys advance to the short go, or finals.

State standings

On the Texas level, Ben was ranked fourth in the Senior Boys All Around for Region 6, and competed in team roping.

Cody Tieken of Floresville was ranked fourth in Region 6 Bareback Riding and competed at state. The son of David and Becky Tieken, Cody graduated from Floresville High School in June.

Region 8

In his first year on the high school circuit, Cameron Crow of Floresville was ranked fifth in Region 8 tiedown, also known as calf roping. Cameron timed a 21.83 and 21.59 in his two rounds at state competition.

The son of Jim Bob and Susan Crow of Floresville, Cameron was last year’s District 8 tiedown leader on the junior high school level.

Stratton Lopez of Adkins ranked No. 9 in the All Around standings.

Serving as the header, he and Logan Weeks of Uvalde were ranked No. 2 in Region 8 and competed at state.

Stratton was ranked 13th in calf roping in Region 8. To qualify for state competition, a cowboy must place in the top 10.

Mason Moore of Pleasanton and Davis Watts of Charlotte tied with two other teams for fifth in Region 8 team roping.

The team timed a 10.18 in the first round of state competition.

Another Atascosa cowboy who competed in team roping was Chase Watt of Jourdanton, who paired with Colton Smith of Lyford. The team tied for 12th in the region standings.
