Council weighs lift-station options
FALLS CITY -- The city council here is weighing its options when it comes to a lift station on Irvin Street.
Mayor Brent Houdmann said following the Aug. 13 meeting that the Falls City City Council agreed to solicit requests for proposals related to replacing the station. The council has been discussing the issue, due to the ongoing construction of the Falls City Independent School District’s new kindergarten through 12th- grade facility nearby.
Typically, sewage systems rely upon gravity to aid with the flow of wastewater. However, when sewage must be pumped from its source to a higher elevation, a sewage pumping station -- often called a “lift station” -- is used to force the wastewater uphill.
“Later in the meeting while discussing wastewater issues, it was suggested that we should also look into what it would cost to rehab the current lift station on Irvin Street, and possibly asking the school to pay for some of the cost of replacing or upgrading the current lift station,” Houdmann said. “It was discussed that the lift station on Irvin is currently meeting the needs of the city. If there is a need to upgrade the current lift station, or build a new one, it will be due to the location of the new school.”
In other business, the council opened bids for road-base materials and dump-truck rentals related to upcoming streets repairs. The mayor said the council did not act on awarding a road-base bid, due to the wording of the agenda. However, the council agreed to rent a dump truck from San Antonio-based Neff Rental.
Also during the meeting, the council voted to award Public Works Supervisor Jeremy Mandel a 3-percent salary increase, following his annual evaluation. This brings his pay up to $23 per hour.
“Mr. Mandel is a very valuable employee for the city and we wanted to make sure that he is compensated appropriately,” Houdmann said.
