STOCKDALE -- When second-year Lady Brahma Head Volleyball Coach Katy Wiatrek took over the program in Stockdale, her goal was to completely turn things around. She and the team made some great strides last season, and Wiatrek is hoping the Lady Brahmas take another big leap this year.

To help things along, Wiatrek can lean on her seven returning lettermen -- five of whom were starters. The Lady Brahmas only lost two players to graduation, and add in a sophomore and a crop of freshmen to augment the roster.

Wiatrek said she doesn’t have any major changes in store for her team, though some changes become necessary to mesh with player personnel.

“It’s always about finding what works best with the kids you have this year,” she said.

The Lady Brahmas learned a lot of basics last year, and Wiatrek said she hopes to develop their skills this season. She said the team works incredibly hard, and she has been pleased with their early efforts. At the same time, she knows that the young players will need to quickly step into their roles if the team is to find success in a tough district.

“I do expect big things from them this year,” Wiatrek said. “Everyone needs to work hard at their role. It’s not about individuals, but rather about the overall team success.”

To help get ready for the season, the Lady Brahmas participated in a San Antonio summer league. Wiatrek wasn’t able to coach them, but said she feels like they gained some valuable experience, and added that it was “a lot of fun to watch.”

The Lady Brahmas will compete as part of District 27-3A, following the reclassification earlier this season. They remain in a district with Poth, Nixon-Smiley, Karnes City, and Luling, but trade out Schulenburg and Hallettsville for Bloomington and Goliad.

“My kids are dedicated to making the change for Stockdale,” Wiatrek said. “They are changed, and people will see that.

“This team is full of talent,” she added. “I’m super excited about this year.”

Wiatrek and the Lady Brahmas will face a number of good opponents throughout the remainder of August and into early September. Stockdale will open district play at home Friday, Sept. 12, as the Lady Brahmas take on the Poth Pirettes.
