STOCKDALE -- The Brahmas enjoyed a taste of success last season, putting together a 7-5 record while playing two rounds deep into the playoffs. Despite being a young team, the Brahmas return a solid group of starters in 2014, and Head Coach Josh West is excited about this season.

This year marks the fourth season West has been at the helm in Stockdale. The “local boy” has been working hard to change the face of the program, and to bring his team and community closer together. He knows that having a successful program can help unite the community, and instill a sense of pride in all.

On the field, the Brahmas return seven starters on offense and another seven on the defensive side of things. West said the team is still quite young, though, and that he only has five seniors on the 2014 roster. Stockdale will be very junior- and sophomore-heavy this season, but West doesn’t think that will keep his team from being competitive.

“We lost some key players, there is no doubt about that, but we have some good kids back,” West said. “We had a good offseason, and everyone is working really hard.”

When it comes to the players to watch, West said he definitely expects big things from senior Josh Carroll.

“He will be a strong force on both sides of the ball, but especially on defense,” West said. “He is a special athlete.”

On the offensive side of the ball, junior quarterback Darien Bird will look to build on the success he found last season. Bird came in midway through the season, and did a good job to close out the district season and lead Stockdale into the playoffs. West said he is also expecting a good season from running back Christian Segura, who will have some big shoes to fill in the Brahma backfield.

The Brahmas have some talent in other key positions as well. West described sophomore Joel Marquez as a “versatile offensive weapon,” stating he can run, catch, and do a lot of different things with the ball in his hands. West is also expecting good things from fellow sophomore Josh Rangel.

“He will do some good things for us,” West said.

One of the biggest plusses the Brahmas have going for them is the size of their line. West said the front line will average about 280 pounds, and said they are good athletes, too. Other players to watch include Aaron Wallace, Connor McLaughlin, and Jeramiah Bellows.

“They are great kids that work hard,” West said, “and Bellows was all-district last year as a sophomore.

West said there won’t be any major changes on offense or defense. Running the same schemes will be beneficial to the kids. West hopes to diversify the offense a bit with the passing game, and he said he has confidence in Bird and his receivers.

The Brahmas will find themselves in a slightly different district this year. Realignment reclassified the Brahmas from 2A to 3A, though nearly every school in the state moved up, and the change was little more than a name. Stockdale remains in a district with rivals Poth, Nixon-Smiley, and Karnes City. They add in Blanco and Natalia to round out District 14-3A DII.

West admits his team has a tough schedule ahead of it, as the Brahmas face Taft, Kenedy, Falls City, Pearsall, and Mathis in the non-district, and then open the district with Blanco and Poth -- the two teams picked by many to finish on top.

“Every game is going to be a battle,” West said. “We need to stay healthy, and we need to play physically and mentally tough. That’s what it’s going to take to win games this year.”

Stockdale opens the season this Friday, Aug. 29, at Taft. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
