POTH -- Pirette volleyball got back on track last year, and once again proved why the team is in the state conversation every year.

Competing in what was arguably one of the best 2A districts in the state, Poth put together an 11-1 district record in 2013 and easily advanced in the playoffs. The team split the title with Schulenburg -- the Pirettes’ one loss -- but eventually fell to the Lady Shorthorns in a third match for the Region IV title. This year, the districts were realigned, and Poth no longer shares a district with Schulenburg.

Unlike a year or two ago, the Pirettes return a great deal of experience this season. This year’s roster contains 10 names from last year, and several of the players have three or more years of varsity experience.

Seniors Alyssa Kallies, Alison Jarzombek, Amanda Wauters, Shelby Yanta, Morgan Lyssy, and Alyssa Kruse will spearhead the talented Poth team this season. Several juniors, including Madi Caloss and Ahnika McPherson, bring back some varsity experience, as does sophomore Keely Loeffler. Freshman Chloe Patton should also help the Pirettes at the net.

Poth started its 2014 season with a pair of losses to Smithson Valley and Alamo Heights, but thundered back with a strong showing in the Austin ISD Tournament, as the Pirettes won seven of nine matches against larger schools. Poth also defeated a very good Floresville team in a tight match that went all five games.

The Pirettes started the season with a solid state ranking, though the folks in Poth rarely pay attention to the polls. On more than one occasion the Pirettes returned home with a state title, despite not being seen as the favorite.

Head Coach Patti Zenner has been on top many times, and has had to rebuild during a few dry years. She and her staff always find ways to get the best from their players, and this year will be no different. With a large returning cast and more experience than recent Pirette teams, Poth should be in great shape by the time they enter district play.

The district is pretty much the same this year, though Schulenburg and Hallettsville are out. Taking their place this year are the teams from Goliad and Bloomington. The Pirettes will also continue to compete with Stockdale, Karnes City, Nixon-Smiley, and Luling.

Poth will continue its non-district schedule through August and early September. The Pirettes will begin District 27-AA competition Friday, Sept. 12, as Poth travels across the county to square off with the Stockdale Lady Brahmas.
