NIXON -- It was a difficult year for the Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustang volleyball team in 2013. With a new head coach and system in place, the team struggled to find its way.

Head Coach Kim Payne, along with assistants James Watkins, Melissa Wheeler, and Megan Tristan, are working hard to bring the team along. The Lady Mustangs were hit hard by graduation in the spring, but return four varsity members from last year’s squad, including seniors Megan Guerra, Miranda Carrillo, Aliyah Moore, and junior Tyhana Mejia.

The Lady Mustangs also find themselves in a new district this year, though there are few actual changes. The team remains aligned with rivals Poth, Stockdale, and Karnes City. District 27-3A will also include Luling, Goliad, and Bloomington.

Nixon-Smiley got off to a rough start, but is looking to get better with every match they play. The team competed in the Schulenburg Tournament last weekend, and will be in Edna for another tournament this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The girls will continue non-district play until Friday, Sept. 12, when they will host Bloomington in their first district game of the season. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
