NIXON -- The Nixon-Smiley Mustang football team had a good year in 2013, and played well enough to make the playoffs. Head Coach Carlton McKinney is hoping to repeat that success, and has a good group returning to make it possible.

The Mustangs went 6-4 through the regular season, but fell in the first round of the playoffs to Refugio -- the Region IV champs who played for the state title.

Nixon-Smiley returns a number of players from last year, including six starters on offense and seven on defense. With no major changes being made, the Mustangs should remain on track as they rebuild a program that suffered from coaching instability over the last decade.

To help keep things going, McKinney will look to his seniors, including quarterback Nick Pena. Pena is a three-year starter for the Mustangs, and has a firm grasp on the system. Junior Sam Moore is likely to be his favorite target this season, and is also a three-year starter for the Mustangs. Senior Tristan Newman could have a big year for the Mustang offense as well, and has also been on varsity throughout his high school career. Good things should also come by way of senior linemen Mikel Scarbrough, Coleton Trammell, and Riley Samford. Senior Justin Ramos will help lead things on the defensive side of the ball, and several players will go “both ways.”

The Mustangs remain in a mostly familiar district, and will continue to battle with Poth, Stockdale, and Karnes City. Joining them in District 14-3A DII are the Blanco Panthers and the Mustangs of Natalia.

Poth and Stockdale are always good rivalry games for Nixon-Smiley, and Karnes City is expected to be very strong with a senior-heavy team. Blanco is new to the district, but is being picked to finish at or near the top of the standings. With four playoff spots up for grabs, the competition will be fierce week in and week out, with every game proving important.

The Mustangs will face Woodsboro, Three Rivers, Hallettsville Sacred Heart, Dilley, and Cotulla in the first half of the season, and then start district play on Oct. 10 against the Karnes City Badgers.

Nixon-Smiley opens its season this Friday, Aug. 29, at home against the Woodsboro Eagles. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
