FLORESVILLE -- The Floresville Jaguar volleyball team made a good run last season, and with eight returning members this season, it’s likely the Jags will play well into the playoffs again this year.

The varsity roster is pretty short in Floresville, but Head Coach Starla Jones said she would rather have her girls playing at the junior varsity level, than simply sitting at varsity games.

“A few could get moved up, but right now, these are the only girls ready to play at the varsity level,” Jones said.

The good news for Floresville is that all eight players on the varsity roster were there last season, and each has that varsity experience to fall back on. With no real changes to the system, all of them can hit the ground running and provide an immediate impact for the Jaguars. Jones said some players have to learn a new spot on the floor, but that so far she has been pleased.

“They are working hard, and it’s good to see,” Jones said. “They know they have to work hard and not take anything for granted.”

The Jaguars find themselves in a new district this season, now playing out of 27-5A. Their district opponents include Boerne Champion, Kerrville Tivy, Lockhart, Alamo Heights, San Marcos, Seguin, Kennedy, and Memorial. Jones said it is full of tough opponents, but that it won’t change Floresville’s approach to the game or its preparations.

“It’s business as usual,” she said. “I’m expecting good things from everyone.”

Jones said her players have started the season well, and are, for the most part, playing as a team -- not as individuals.

“Teamwork is my biggest thing,” Jones said. “If they work together they will be successful. They are tough to beat when they work as a team.”

The Jags played a vigorous non-district schedule to start the year, and even played host to a large 20-plus team tournament last weekend. The team was scheduled to host Medina Valley on Aug. 26, and will compete in the Leander Tournament this weekend.

The Jaguars begin their quest for a district title on Tuesday, Sept. 2, as the Lady Lions of Lockhart travel to Floresville. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
