FLORESVILLE -- With the loss of so many to graduation, and the inclusion in a new, tougher district, the Floresville Tiger football team certainly has a lot of work to do.

Floresville returns just 17 lettermen this season, and must deal with the loss of every lineman from both sides of the ball. This is a very real concern for the Tigers, but Head Coach Jeff Luna has faith his team will be ready.

“I believe we have the best offensive line coach in the state,” Luna said. “I am certainly concerned about the line, but at the same time, I know Coach Donnie Bishop will have at least five kids ready to go when we kick off.”

There are a few bright spots to focus on, though, including the return of four starters on offense, including junior quarterback Koby Wilkerson and junior running back Alex Mermea. Senior Troy Hughey and junior Brandon Mutz are also returning to the starting lineup, and should bring some stability to an otherwise green offense. Coach Clay Kasprzyk is the team’s new offensive coordinator, and Luna feels good about the direction of his offense.

The offense will work primarily out of the “Pro-I,” and will use a lot of shotgun formation. Wilkerson became more comfortable as the season progressed last year, and Luna expects that he will handle things well. Luna said Wilkerson and the entire offense are actually farther along than they were at this point last year. Mermea was moved up midway through last year due to injuries, but still turned in great numbers, running for 589 yards and eight touchdowns in just six games. Luna said he had a great summer of workouts, too, and came back ready to play.

On the defensive side of things, Coach Gary Smith takes over as the coordinator, and brings an enthusiastic approach to the position. Luna said his front line won’t be as big this year, but expects that they will be quicker and faster.

The Tigers will play in a different district this year, following the spring realignments. Floresville is also now considered a Class 5A school, though enrollment numbers didn’t really change.

Floresville finds itself in a big nine-team district, meaning the Tigers will only play two non-district games this season. Once the District 27-5A schedule gets under way, Floresville will square off with the teams from Kerrville Tivy, Kennedy, Boerne Champion, Lockhart, San Marcos, Seguin, Memorial, and Alamo Heights. Floresville also has the misfortune of a bye week during the last week of the season.

“It’s definitely a tougher district this year, and may be one of the toughest in the state in Class 5A,” Luna said. “It will be rough, but we can only control what we control. We have to have our mindset straight. We wanted to be playing these types of teams anyway, we just thought it would be non-district and playoff games.”

Luna said his team must continue to work hard throughout the season, and will need to be prepared for district a bit sooner than normal. He said he feels the key to success for the Tigers will be in controlling the ball and the line of scrimmage.

“We have to win the turnover battle, too,” Luna said. “We have to get better every day.”

The Tigers will begin their season this Saturday, Aug. 30, as they travel to San Antonio to face Highlands at Alamo Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
