2014 Fall Sports Preview: Beavers reload for another year of physical football

FALLS CITY -- While some teams have years of “rebuilding,” others are said to simply “reload.” This tends to be the case in Falls City, where the Beaver football team is always considered a favorite to win titles.
The Beavers made it to the state championship again last year, but came up short against a talented team from Wellington. Then, in the spring, the team lost a good portion of its players, and starters, as graduation ended their time in high school.
Still, Falls City has a depth of talent and is once again the favorite to win its district. The Beavers bring back just four starters on offense and three on defense, but that doesn’t mean the team is without varsity experience. Due to a number of lopsided victories last year, everyone in a set of pads saw some amount of playing time.
When it comes to players to watch this year, Head Coach Steve Marbach looks to guys like senior lineman William Stolle, and juniors Joseph Swierc and Conner Jendrusch. Stolle is a beast on both sides of the ball, and has been for several years as a member of the varsity squad. Swierc is a three-year varsity letterman, and brings a great deal of speed to the Beaver backfield. Jendrusch played well above his years as a sophomore last season, and will be even better this season. Junior linebacker Mitch Lyssy should also step up nicely for the Beaver defense.
Though listed as the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart last season, junior quarterback Zach Jimerson still saw a lot of playing time. Marbach’s system is old hat to the junior gunslinger, and he should bring a level of stability to the offense. Junior receiver Gabe Jimerson has good hands and speed, and will give his twin brother, Zach, a reliable target throughout the season.
With the reclassification in the spring, Falls City was declared a Class 2A school, though the enrollment numbers didn’t really change. Everyone pretty much moved up, and it amounts to little more than a name change. District 14-2A DII will remain a five-team district, as the Beavers battle Kenedy, Runge, Louise, and Yorktown for the title.
Before they get to that point, though, the Beavers will have to work through their non-district schedule. Marbach has once again put together a group of strong teams to help prepare his team for district and the playoffs. Falls City will open the season with D’Hanis, before going on to play Poth, Stockdale, Sabinal, Ben Bolt, and George West. Keeping his team healthy will be the major concern for Marbach as they move toward the district season.
“We are very thin in numbers compared to last year, so our guys are going to have to be in great shape,” Marbach said. “Many of them will never leave the field.”
Marbach said that his team is making some minor changes this season, and will be under center a bit more on offense, but will otherwise be the same team the fans know and love. He is counting on the team’s defense and overall experience to carry them through, and sees his players’ upstanding character as a true team strength.
The Beavers officially kick off their season this Friday, Aug. 29, as they host the D’Hanis Cowboys. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
