EAST CENTRAL -- With nine returning lettermen, and seven players with starting experience, 2014 should prove productive for the East Central Hornet volleyball team.

Second-year Head Coach Todd Dorgan has a lot of experience coming back this season, and he knows the Hornets have a chance to do something special.

“All kids are special, but a special class like this is rare,” Dorgan said. “These girls have a very special dynamic.”

With tons of varsity experience, and a full season under Dorgan’s system, the Black and Gold are poised to make waves. The girls have a great level of trust in Dorgan, as well as each other, and that is a winning combination. Dorgan sees that relationship as the team’s greatest strength, and said they should build on that to get better every day.

The Hornets went 8-2 in district last season, and have a legitimate shot at winning the District 28-6A title this season. East Central’s district looks very similar to what they faced last year, and includes Southwest, South San, and the Corpus Christi schools -- Carroll, King, and Ray.

When it comes to goals, Dorgan said his goals for the girls remain the same from year to year. He wants them to develop lasting relationships, graduate in the top 25 percent of their class, win championships, and give back to the community.

To win those championships, Dorgan believes his team needs to continue working hard to improve. He said they need to start fast and finish strong, and to be “consistently consistent.”

“Consistency is an important part of the team’s success, and it all starts with me,” Dorgan said. “They have to see me be consistent in my attitude and effort every day. I work hard to do that for them.”

Dorgan said he also wants the fans and student body to remember this team for how it plays, not just how it finishes the season in the record books.

“Parents shouldn’t know if we are up or down by how we act on the court,” he said. “We should be excited and playing with enthusiasm no matter the score.”

The Hornets will continue their non-district schedule through September, and will open district play at home on Friday, Sept. 26, as they host Corpus Christi Carroll.
