Approximately 120 acres of farmland and several outbuildings and their contents have been consumed, as an out-of-control grass fire blazed across properties near the intersection of C.R. 119 and F.M. 1303 in northwestern Wilson County today.

Firefighters from Floresville, Poth, Three Oaks, La Vernia, Stockdale, St. Hedwig, Cañada Verde, and Eagle Creek have battled most of the afternoon in near-100-degree heat to contain the blaze, which consumed several outbuildings on a property owned by the Purchis family, said Wilson County Pct. 1 Commissioner Albert Gamez, whose personnel also aided in the battle. They were joined by Eagle Creek emergency medical personnel and a firefighter rehab unit from Bexar County. Wilson County Fire Marshal Edwin Baker is coordinating firefighting efforts.

“The fire’s pretty much contained now,” Gamez said at approximately 3:40 p.m. “We managed to save the house.”

Properties on C.R. 120 also were threatened, but these were saved, Gamez said.

The heat and wind have fanned the flames, Gamez said, making it difficult to battle the hotspots remaining.

Wonderful job by all involved in awful conditions. The whole county is fortunate to have these folks aiding us.

The grass is extremely dry and the hot winds do not help. Please be careful out there!
