Officers from the Floresville Police Department responded Jan. 13 to shots fired outside the station located at the corner of C and Second streets in Floresville.

Police Sgt. Devin Keen said patrolmen Eric Hutchinson and Gilbert Rodriguez were in the station just after 5:30 p.m. when they heard five gunshots. Keen and patrolmen Billy Herrera and Matthew Redd raced to the scene to assist their fellow officers.

They found a Honda Accord sedan parked on Second Street with an adult white male inside. The man, a war veteran who served two tours in Iraq, had left a note indicating that he intended to take his own life, due to not receiving assistance from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder -- commonly known by the acronym “PTSD.”

The victim, whose name is being withheld, was flown via AirLife helicopter to University Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest.
