I remember another time in life
As time moves us to other places
When a lady caught us boys off guard
And told us somethin’ gracious.

“There isn’t much to tell ya, kid”
Was the reply she gave to all
“I was just a livin’ like I did --
“I tho’t I’s havin’ me a ball.”

“But the nights were long and bitter”
She paused to catch her breath
“The days were lived with vigor”
“Tho’ I’s only cheatin’ death.”

“But then there came this moment”
“When it all made sense, you see”
“That what I was wasn’t livin’”
“’Cause I’s just a foolin’ me.”

“But how I was is all behind me. Those seeds've all been sown,"
“Cause I found what makes life real livin’”
“As I ain’t livin’ it all alone.”

“See, those times when it all'd get quiet”
“And I hear my old self cry”
“There was something down inside me”
“Tryin' to turn my life dirt dry”
“Like drinkin’ but can’t quench the thirst”
“Or eatin’ ‘til I thought I'd burst”
“But ya can’t fill it up inside at all”
“And all ya try just makes it worse.”

“So, like I said, I wasn’t livin’”
“But merely fillin’ time”
“But now things are truly different”
“Cause I’m livin’ with peace of mind.”

“Oh, some still look at me and cringe, wonder what’s been changed”
“But ya see it wasn’t me who did it. You've heard His Holy Name.

“Nah, I ain’t gonna preach to you ‘cause preachin’ ain’t my style”
“But I can tell you all about Him if you’ll just sit here a while.”

“When you’re tired of your runnin’ and the dryness in your deepest part”
“You’ll have a thirstin’ for what’s really real and listen with a hungry heart.”
“’Cause ya see that’s where He found me, just a waitin’ for me to turn”
“To fill me with what’s filled me now and give me what I’d yearned.”

“It ain’t like some churches preached it”
“All those do’s and don’ts and things”
“I can tell ya it’s a passion like no other that makes ya wants to sing”
“It’s a thrill that can’t be bottled and it makes ya feel so clean"
“It’s a joy that makes ya look at life and gives your heart some wings"
“It’s a Friend who knows you but don’t care 'bout your deepest flaw”
“And if you think about it that’s enough to hear His call.”

She stopped her words abruptly as if we’d hear Him right then too
And she didn’t try to make it work she just let her words sink through.

Our moments then weren’t many and the minutes were just a few
But her words left a pullin' feelin’ like we’d miss something that she knew.

Her words seemed more than wisdom
And her smile was as one who’d known
That a life ain’t really livin’ when it's livin’ all alone. (hrg)
