Coaches take: Layne takes over the program vacated by the departure of long-time coach Bo Robinson. Layne ran the offense for the Class 5A DII champs from Ennis High School last season, and will bring his multiple formation pro-style offense to La Vernia. Volentine will serve as his offensive coordinator. The defense will remain largely unchanged as Taylor calls the plays. Layne said that his team is very strong and physical, and that those attributes should serve them well over the course of the season. He acknowledged that the Bears play in a competitive district, but said he wouldn’t bet against his boys. His goals remain high, as he wants to help La Vernia win a regional and state championship.  . . .
