(UPDATE TO ORIGINAL STORY: Floresville City Manager Henrietta Turner said the Texas Balloon Spectacular is at capacity. There is no room for any more visitors. "Anyone still in line waiting to get in is being turned away," she said at 6:35 pm today.)

The Texas Balloon Spectacular has visitors flocking to Floresville in droves, so much so that traffic is backed up north of the city on U.S. 181 from Loop 1604, according to eyewitnesses.

Floresville police Chief Lorenzo Herrera is helping members of his department direct traffic at The Villages at River Bend in Floresville for the event. To those driving to the balloon spectacular he said, "Be patient. Traffic and parking are time-consuming. It's slow, but smooth, and you will get in. But be patient."

Herrera advises that since traffic is heavy on U.S. 181 southbound into Floresville, drivers should avoid that route if they're not headed to the event. Alternate routes are I-37 and U.S. 87. City residents should avoid Business Loop 181, Herrera said, if they're not attending the Texas Balloon Spectacular.

Overflow parking originally set at the Floresville Event Center is not in use, Herrera said; he did not know why, but that it was canceled at the "last minute."

If you're headed that way, "Take your time," said Wilson County Sheriff Joe D. Tackitt Jr. "I understand it's taking 1-1/2 to 2 hours to get in."

Unofficial sources indicate the planned evening balloon flights have been suspended, but the "Great Ghostly Glow" will take place, & the festival & live music continue.

My friends enjoyed the nice cool walk and the two iron bridges were a nice sight for them to experience. The high grass wasn't a problem, about 10 yards worth.

That's a good idea Ricky, The Railroad Walking path could have been a good route. But Riverbend hasn't connected the walking areas. The path next to the mantainence shed is all grown up with grass and not cleared out. I thought... More ›

The city should of joined in to promote the downtown businesses. I kept up with the Balloon Spectacular Facebook page and they knew over 50 thousand people stated they were coming. Plus their friends. I live in the downtown area... More ›

The balloons were beautiful but has anyone heard anything about all the frightened horses and cattle that stampeded when the balloons came over. The noise was too much for the animals and they panicked. One man out in the... More ›

Yes, There were enough Police and EMS protection to handle the event. Floresville EMS was on site with one of their units, and the PD had all officers not on Duty at the event. Judging from the responses on Facebook, most people... More ›

So, was the EMS and Police on location adequate for handling the amount of vehicles and personnel attending the event? That is a risk. To think everyone is on Facebook is another failed assumption, there are huge gaps in the... More ›

ok, putting people's lives at risk is a stretch. They had EMS and Police on location, Fire Dept was there Friday night and most of Saturday. It was definitely an inconvenience, especially for those of us that lived there. My... More ›

Joann: By not knowing what you were doing put numerous people's lives at risk. Someone should have put a stop to the unsafe situation before it was allowed to get out of control. Young and inexperience is no excuse for someone's... More ›
