The Floresville City Council ordered a special election on May 7 for city council Place 5.

Council members acted at a special Dec. 21 meeting. Floresville City Attorney Chris Hugg said this was the last opportunity for the council to set an election for May, instead of November, in accordance with state law.

The election was set to fill the seat held by Councilman Jim Miller, which the council voted to declare vacant. Miller will continue to hold his seat until a new council member is elected in his place.

Council members split 2-2 in calling for the election, with Councilmen Daniel Tejada and Juan Ortiz voting in favor and Councilmen Johnny Ray Nieto and Miller voting in opposition. (Councilman Chris Talamantez was absent.) Mayor Sherry Castillo cast the tie-breaking vote for the election.

The deadline to file for the council position is Feb. 19. All registered Floresville voters are eligible to vote in this election. See PDF download for notice.

Floresville City Secretary Monica Cordova estimated the special election will cost between $15,000 and $20,000.

By limiting citizen comment, they are, of course, limiting potential growth. "Outsiders" are not to be heard -- or welcomed into the community.

New Guy, perhaps like Tejada, I rent from my son? Or my house could be in my husband's name and I could go by my maiden name - what is your fascination with me? Should I be flattered?
