Congrats to the Nixon-Smiley Mustang baseball team for place third in the District!

Show your support and head on over to Yoakum this Friday, May 6 at 7 pm for Game 1 of playoffs where the boys will be taking on Industrial. Game 2 will be on Saturday, May 7 at 12 pm. Way to go Mustangs!

Here’s what Head Coach Bobby Newman had to say about the season:

"I think we competed really well this year in all areas of the game. We hit the ball well, played pretty solid defense most of the year, and got really good outings from our pitchers throughout the season. I felt like we ran the bases aggressively which allowed us to pick up extra runs here and there. I think our kids gained confidence as the season progressed. We won several close ball games which is something we didn't do last season.

We still need to improve our focus at times. We are young, and I don't want to use that as an excuse, but I do think it factors in. We are learning how to go about things and how to prepare for ball games and getting better everyday.

I think everyone really stepped up this year. Coming into the year we knew what we had at a couple of positions, but were unsure in others. I have been really pleased with our defense, and our hitting. Every night someone different steps up and makes a play or gets a big hit. One through nine in the batting order, at some point everyone of those guys has stepped up and contributed big for us.

Heading in to the playoffs, I think we are in pretty good shape. Everyone is healthy, the kids are excited, and I want to see us continue to compete. I want the kids to have fun and enjoy it, but compete. Compete with a passion and purpose of going to the next round each and every time out. The important thing for us is to play well and compete, win or lose. I think it sets a tone going forward for the whole Mustang Athletic program."
