Honor Memorial Day

Memorial : A recognition of meritorious service.

Memorial Day: A day to recognize that meritorious service.

So why do people say "HAPPY" memorial day? It’s just not...right. Shouldn’t we say, "Thoughtful Memorial Day", or, "Pensive Memorial Day"?

Or how about: Honor Memorial Day? ... Yes! Honor Memorial Day!

I asked the 17 year old who works for me if she knew what it was. Memorial Day for all she knew was that her grandmother was going to be cooking and grilling all day for the family.

I helped her to understand what Memorial Day was (and encouraged her to ask the adults at the gathering she’d be at if they knew what it was) and what was the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

Why didn’t she learn that in school; she should have known what it was by the time she hit the 5th grade. She’s about to be a high school senior and she’s ... clueless.

I’m not singing my own praises but she’s lucky to have picked me to befriend and have as a boss because her family (parents, grandparents) and schools are failing her miserably.

Memorial Day is not just a ‘holiday.’

Speaking of holidays, do people even know what holiday means? It is a derivative -- it means, holy day. That’s where the word "holiday" came from. But wait, based on that I take back what I just said. Memorial Day SHOULD be considered a HOLY day, one of deep reverence, gratitude and appreciation. The folks who put flags on the soldiers graves, they’ve got a clue.

But these days, it’s just a day off from work where people drink beer and cook out. No one spends time during those cookouts discussing the meaning of the day and the people who have made it possible for us to speak freely about anything over a burger and beer.

So, I guess the WCN article by Martha Randolph Carr, May 27, 2010 "Happy Memorial Day" is wrong?
