As a result of failing post-race laser inspection at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn after the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the track June 12, the No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet team of driver Kyle Larson was penalized, according to the weekly penalty announcement from NASCAR on June 15.

It was the second-consecutive race weekend of penalties for the No. 42 team. Substitute crew chief Philip Surgen was fined $25,000, Larson was docked 15 championship driver points and the team lost 15 car owner points. Surgen was the crew chief on duty at MIS while regular crew chief, Chad Johnston, served a one-race suspension for a lug nut issue the previous race weekend at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa. Johnston will be back atop the No. 42 pit box for Sunday’s race at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway.

Four other Sprint Cup Series teams will be docked 15 minutes of practice time at Sonoma because of inspection issues at Michigan. The No. 2 Team Penske Ford team of Brad Keselowski, the No. 16 Roush Fenway Racing Ford team of Greg Biffle, the No. 23 BK Racing Toyota team of David Ragan and the No. 46 HScott Motorsports Chevrolet team of Michael Annett each failed pre-race laser inspection at Michigan. Each of the four aforementioned teams also received written warnings.

Several other Sprint Cup teams also received written warnings because of MIS inspection issues. The No. 15 HScott Motorsports Chevrolet team of Clint Bowyer twice failed pre-race inspection. The No. 32 Go FAS Racing Ford team of Jeffrey Earnhardt, the No. 44 Richard Petty Motorsports Ford team of Brian Scott and the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet team of Dale Earnhardt Jr. each received written warnings for twice failing pre-qualifying laser inspection. Meanwhile, the No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet team of Tony Stewart, the No. 17 Roush Fenway Racing Ford team of Ricky Stenhouse Jr., the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet team of Chase Elliott, the No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford team of Chris Buescher, the No. 41 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet team of Kurt Busch, the No. 47 JTG Daugherty Racing Chevrolet team of A.J. Allmendinger and the No. 55 Premium Motorsports Chevrolet team of Cole Whitt each twice failed pre-qualifying template inspection.

The No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota team of Martin Truex Jr. received two written warnings at Michigan, one for twice failing pre-qualifying laser inspection and the other for two failures of pre-qualifying template inspection.
