(Revised 7/12/16, 8:20 pm*) Floresville city Councilman Johnny Ray Nieto plans to resign from the council.

He told the Wilson County News that he probably will make his resignation effective at the end of the month. The city council is expected to act on the resignation at its regular meeting Thursday, July 14.

Nieto said he is resigning because he and his family have moved to San Antonio.

He explained that his wife, previously a Floresville Independent School District counselor, has accepted a position with another school district in San Antonio, and he is commuting from San Antonio to Ancira Ford’s Floresville dealership, where he works.

“I want to resign in time to give others a chance to file [for his council seat],” he said. The deadline to file applications for election to the council is Aug. 22.

Because he was re-elected to another two-year term on the council in November 2015, his seat was not scheduled for an election until 2017. The council will have to take action to allow for an election to his seat.

Remaining council members cannot appoint anyone to fill Nieto’s seat because they appointed former city Councilman Sherry Castillo as mayor last November. The city charter forbids the council from appointing more than one member within a year’s time.

Senior - he said he was not involved. I think he recused himself when this actually started with the council hiring special counsel. Since the council merely approved the agenda item as it was read, I suppose they are continuing ... More ›

Fortunately, according to the State Constitution, Councilman Nieto will "holdover" in office until his replacement is sworn in!
