Floresville city Councilman Johnny Ray Nieto plans to resign from the Floresville City Council after his successor is elected in November.

He told the Wilson County News that he is resigning because he and his family have moved to San Antonio.

He explained that his wife, previously a Floresville Independent School District counselor, has accepted a position with another school district in San Antonio. He said he is commuting from San Antonio to Ancira Ford’s Floresville dealership, where he continues to work.

“I want to resign in time to give others a chance to file [for his council seat],” he said. The deadline to file applications for election to the council is Aug. 22.

Because he was re-elected to another two-year term on the council in November 2015, his seat was not scheduled for an election until 2017. The council will have to take action to call for an election to his Place 3 seat at the same time as the scheduled election for mayor and council places 4 and 5.

Council members accepted Nieto’s resignation at their July 14 meeting. He can remain on the council as a “holdover” until his successor is elected.
