NASCAR brings back aero package for Michigan

NASCAR introduced aerodynamic rules changes for Sprint Cup Series cars in the June race at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn and the race at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta in July to further reduce downforce. The sanctioning body announced on Thursday that those rules changes would be utilized when the series returns to Michigan for the Aug. 28 Pure Michigan 400.

“We have talked to our community -- that includes the drivers, the teams, the owners, the OEMs -- and we all arrived at the decision that we thought it would be a good thing to go back to Michigan with the Michigan 1 package for several reasons,” NASCAR Senior Vice President of Innovation and Racing Development Gene Stefanyshyn said. “One is that it will help us to manage corner speeds better. There was some discussion on tweaking the package, but where we all landed on that is we thought it was best to proceed with the package we ran at Michigan 1, because the teams have some knowledge on that. And a lot of teams believe they still have some fine-tuning they can do on that package.”

Those changes include a shorter rear spoiler, a resized rear deck fin and a smaller front splitter. The spoiler will go from 3.5 inches to 2.5 inches, and the rear deck fin will change to complement the resized spoiler. The size of the splitter will be reduced by two inches.

If NASCAR is happy with the results it sees in the second Michigan race, the aforementioned changes will be the basis of the 2017 rules package.

Stefanyshyn held a teleconference on Thursday, during which he outlined changes coming to next year’s Sprint Cup Series cars to improve safety. The changes affect the chassis, floorboard, driver’s anti-intrusion plating, firewall and footbox areas of the car.

Team have been provided with the specific details of the changes that are optional for the remainder of the 2016 season. They will be mandatory for the restrictor-plate races at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway and Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in 2017 and at all tracks in 2018.
