The La Vernia High School Mighty Bear Band, under the direction of second-year band director Patrick Atkins, is wrapping up summer band practice in preparation for this year’s marching season. Assisting the drum majors in leadership roles are the captains and section leaders. Among these key leaders is distinguished musician and percussion section captain Gavin Covey. Atkins says Covey is a remarkable musician who, during the 2016 Texas State Solo-Ensemble Contest -- a competition that includes nearly 25,000 competitors -- earned distinction as an Outstanding Performer.
