It is difficult at times to listen to him. Our super-sensitive ears find anything but the most politically correct Pablum akin to hearing fingernails scraping a chalkboard.

We are not used to calling people who lie, “liars” or politicians who go around the law, “lawbreakers.” Instead, we excuse them saying they “misspoke.” Not so with Donald Trump; and so he is torn apart in the media.

Supporters of Trump, however, stand solidly behind him with the knowledge of his intent, not the semantics of his words. Whatever his exact words, they understand the substance.

So while Hillary Clinton can say anything she wants with abandon, Trump’s words are taken literally and often out of context. Clinton lies or is evasive and is not called on it. Trump, on the other hand, is scrutinized.

For instance, when Trump said early in his campaign that he would deport 11 million illegals, his critics pointed out that maybe it’s really “only 10.5 million” or it could be 12 million. They make it sound like he doesn’t know what he’s talking about by nitpicking at everything.

Trump often uses hyperbole to make his point. That is not lying. When he talks about 11 million people being deported, common sense says that you cannot issue a blanket order to deport massive numbers of people all in one fell swoop.

It is a process, and you have to start somewhere. Trump voices support for enforcing existing laws, support for the Border Patrol, and support for the police and other law enforcement.

Getting out the message in this climate, however, gets dicey. A Pew Research Center survey shows that about a quarter of all Americans have sought information about Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton from social media, and the majority get their election news from television. That’s not much better than relying on social media, especially when many of the “newscasters” merely repeat the Clinton campaign’s talking points while they tear apart Trump’s comments.

When Trump says he’ll build a wall, if it is not literally a 2,000-mile brick-and-mortar wall, he is “softening” his immigration plan.

No. His speech in Arizona delivered shortly after he met with Mexico’s President Enrique Pena Nieto was tough. He did not waiver. One thing I have not heard in the press was an explanation of one of Trump’s specifics about the wall. He said he would use the latest monitoring technology, incorporating both above-ground and below-ground sensors. These would help detect the huge underground tunnels that currently extend from inside Mexico into the United States. He has a plan.

The only thing we’ve heard from Hillary about her immigration policy is that she has none. Leave the borders open and don’t allow the Border Patrol or ICE to enforce the law.

It is simply unconscionable that the media repeat what is essentially little more than Clinton campaign rhetoric. It’s not that Trump is “changing” his plans -- he is developing his plans, as any sane person understands. It’s not that, as the media say, he’s trying to find a way to change his message, but merely to refine it.

If the media would just get off the Clinton bandwagon, Americans might have a chance to hear the real message.
