The airwaves may be filled with presidential campaign rhetoric and debates, but that office isn’t all that voters will decide this November. Watch for the Candidates Forum, along with updates and polling locations, in coming issues of the Wilson County News. The last day to register to vote in the Nov. election is Oct. 11.

Annexation -- Emergency Services

Voters in the La Vernia, Kicaster, and Sutherland Springs areas will vote whether or not to allow Wilson County Emergency Services District (ESD) No. 1 (La Vernia-area ESD) to annex property in the Kicaster and Sutherland Springs areas to provide fire-protection services. Firefighting services have been provided in the Kicaster area by the La Vernia-area ESD through its provider, the La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department (VFD), since the closure last year of the Kicaster VFD. Sutherland Springs-area firefighting has been provided by the La Vernia and Stockdale fire departments since the closure in 2014 of the Sutherland Springs VFD.

Wilson County ESD No. 2, the Eagle Creek-area ESD, also has annexation plans for voter consideration in the wake of the closure of the Kicaster VFD.

The first area includes the Tower Lake subdivision, the C.R. 150 area, and from C.R. 128 to the Bexar County line.

The second area includes the City View subdivision, county roads 325 and 326, four properties in Whispering Oaks, and the area between the Eagle Creek Ranch, Whispering Oaks, and Tierra Robles subdivisions. This also is due to the closure of a nearby fire department.

County tax

Voters not residing within city limits will also determine if Wilson County will establish a county assistance district to raise funds via a sales tax in unincorporated parts of the county. If approved, the new district will impose a 2-percent tax on sales within the district to fund certain public services, projects, and programs. This district will not include inside the city limits of Floresville, La Vernia, Nixon, Poth, and Stockdale, nor within the boundaries of the Eagle Creek-area ESD; these areas already levy a sales tax.

Voters will choose whether or not to adopt a quarter-cent sales and use tax to raise general revenue funds.

Voters will decide the city council make-up from candidates for:
•Mayor: Mario Morones and Cissy Gonzalez Dippel
•Council Place 1: David Johns and Daniel Tejada (incumbent)
•Council Place 2: Nick Nissen and Juan Ortiz (incumbent)
•Council Place 3: Debbie Bolf, Frank S Ramirez, and Jacob R. Silva.

Sandy Oaks

Vying for council places:
•Mayor: Micki L. Ball (incumbent) and Dr. Karen Tanguma
•Place 2: Anthony Garcia and Gary Bricken
•Place 4: Charles Fillinger and Thomas Repino.

East Central ISD

Seeking places on the school board are:
•District 3: John Massengale (incumbent)
•District 4: Victor Garza (incumbent)
•District 6: Claudia V. Barrientos (incumbent), Mona L. Lopez, and Amanda L. Rivas.

How do I request a ballot by mail and what are the parameters for requesting mail ballots? Do you have a phone number/mailing address/email so I can find out this information? Thank you.
