Management of the department must change. A law-enforcement agency cannot be controlled by peer-pressure tactics from administrators and threats of termination (“at-will doctrine”).

Training must be provided for all personnel -- corrections, deputies, and civilians -- not only state and federal mandates, but training to coincide with the communities and people that make up Wilson County, as well as training on departmental policies.

Equipment upgrades. This is going to pinch a little (tax increase), but it is not a want, it’s a necessity. Vehicles look good, but officers do not have the tools to accomplish their jobs efficiently.

Manpower. Wilson County is undermanned and the officers are working at their extremes timewise. More personnel must be hired and placed in the areas of need -- deputies, correction, and dispatch. A graduating pay scale should be used to retain valuable experienced personnel.

Changes cannot be done all at once. When I am elected sheriff of Wilson County, I will slowly progress the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office to the present, restructuring each section. Citizens will see a big difference.

Changes cannot be stopped; they can only be prolonged. We must encourage change, because times have changed and we must be prepared.

Vote for change.

The Wilson County News will provide a Candidates Forum in the print edition Oct. 26. In an effort to provide voters with information earlier, the Wilson County News is publishing candidate information as it is received.
