My proposal to address the city’s debt is to expand our city limits, especially down Hwy. 181. Annexation will bring more taxes (sales and property) into our General Fund. I also feel we cannot afford to get ourselves into more debt. The city’s issuance of a bond to put in a sports complex needs to be reviewed. I understand that the present city park’s fields are battling river erosion, but we need to think outside the box and look at another way to put the proposed park in, without incurring more debt.

I estimate the current debt to be over $18 million. According to the 2016-17 adopted budget by the Floresville City Council, “The total amount of municipal debt obligations ... for the city of Floresville is a little over $10 million.” I understand, from reviewing Wilson County News tapes, the convention center debt (4A corporation), after the 2015 restructuring, is around $7 million. At this point in time, I have not had access to the total debt owed by the FEDC (4B corporation), but I have heard from sources not affiliated with the FEDC, it is close to $1.4 million.

The Wilson County News will provide a Candidates Forum in the print edition Oct. 26. In an effort to provide voters with information earlier, the Wilson County News is publishing candidate information as it is received.
