SAN ANTONIO -- “Let’s Rodeo San Antonio” may be the slogan of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, but it turned out to be more than an eight-second ride for the East Central FFA Chapter. The East Central FFA had an exciting and eventful show, from the various skillathon and biathlon events to the livestock exhibitors.

Johnna Pieniazek, a freshman, earned second-place honors in this year’s Poultry Biathlon event. Rounding out the top seven places were Emileigh Geistweidt, third; Kelsey Mihalski, fourth; Jordan Hevner, sixth; and Stephenie Geistweidt, seventh.

In the Swine Skillathon, it was the sister duo of Kylie Patterson and Kaitlyn Kempen that earned fourth-place honors within their respective age groups.

In the 2013 Beef Skillathon competition, Kaitlyn returned and placed sixth in the intermediate division. In the senior division, Kylie placed 16th and Jordan Hevner placed 13th.

In the Meats Evaluation contest, the East Central FFA team placed third overall with Jordan taking ninth-place honors.

In the Poultry Evaluation contest, the East Central team was fourth overall, with Stephenie Geistweidt judging to third-place honors and Cheyenne Zaiontz judging to 10th-place honors.

At the San Antonio Stock Show Science Fair, Tommy Fletcher’s project earned third place within his division.

In the Agricultural Mechanics competition, Hunter Shadrock placed third with his 35-foot hay-hauling unit. Hunter also exhibited his hay-hauling unit at the San Angelo Livestock Show and earned a first-place ribbon for his efforts.

Breeding show

During the breeding heifer show, Crystalyn Bettice’s Limousin earned first place. Also making a splash at the heifer show were Kristen Ayala, eighth place, Limousin; Lexie Ricks, second place, Limousin; Trace Bettice, fourth place, Limousin; Todd Bettice, second place, Simbrah; and Jordan Hevner, sixth place, Brangus.

During the breeding swine show, Dustin Holloway placed second and sixth with his Hampshire and Yorkshire gilts, respectively. Cheyenne Zaiontz earned fourth-place honors with her Yorkshire gilt; Shannon Zaiontz and Logan Taylor placed ninth in the Hampshire and Yorkshire divisions, respectively.

Amy Moran entered the winner’s circle by exhibiting a second-place winner in the breeding boar goat show.

Swine, poultry

The San Antonio Stock Show proved to be positive for many swine and poultry feeders.

In the market hog competition, Kyle Wildman fed the lightweight reserve division champion. Brittany Coble placed fourth and Jessica Hawkins placed sixth with their market hog entries.

During the turkey tom show, Jessica Hawkins earned 12th place with her turkey tom. In the turkey hen division, Aaron Maron placed sixth; Koy Dieckow, ninth; Cade Franckowiak, 13th; and Cassidy Jordan, 19th. Robbin Ott rounded out the poultry show with a 21st place in the broiler show.

Goat, lamb

The placings in the goat and lamb division were few, but the quality was extremely high.

The East Central FFA had only a single lamb place in this year’s show, but it was very exciting with Ciarra Gawlik placing third in the Southdown market lamb division.

The East Central FFA steers found the sale slots easily with six steers making the auction.

Tommy Fletcher’s Simbrah steer placed second; Blake Zigmond, third, Angus; Alexis Wagner, second, Santa Gertrudis; Jordan Hevner, sixth, ABC; and Kaylee Bettice, second place, AOB.

Kylie Patterson earned first place in the Brahman steer division and later was named reserve champion Brahman steer for this year’s event. Kylie earned an $8,000 scholarship for earning the reserve champion title.
