Poth’s ag students win big in Houston

A Poth High School ag mechanics team competed at the Houston Stock Show and Rodeo for the first time, bringing home a red ribbon for placing second in their division out of 870 entries. This is the first time Poth was represented at the Houston show in this event.
Juniors Cody Jarzombek and Will Schraub, accompanied by welding instructor Cornelio Ontiveros, traveled to Houston to compete March 21-23 at Reliant Stadium. Other members of the team, seniors Jerrek Hosek and Brandon Brysch, could not attend.
The four-member team fabricated a trailer in six weeks, at a cost of $10,000. During the school year, the students learned a lot about pressures, hydraulic systems, and welding.
The 23-1/2-foot hydraulic equipment tilt flatbed trailer, with a 3-1/2-foot dovetail, has a maximum lift capacity of 10,000 pounds. The maximum weight for the trailer is 14,000 pounds.
“It was a first time for us all,” Ontiveros said. “We had to learn quickly and where and what to do. I was very proud of the guys; they worked long hours, including prepping and answering questions that the guests and judges had.”
This was not the first contest for the foursome. They entered the Wilson County Junior Livestock Show ag mechanic contest in January with a barbecue pit trailer.
