FLORESVILLE -- For the second time in three days, area volunteer firefighters have been summoned to fight a windswept brush fire north of Floresville. This time, it was on U.S. 181 near F.M. 775.

Edwin Baker, coordinator of the Wilson County Health and Public Safety Office, is the county’s fire marshal. He said that at approximately 11:47 a.m., the Eagle Creek Volunteer Fire Department was called to a brush-covered area between Oak Hills Water Supply Corp. and Faifer & Co., after someone reported a fire that started on the side of the road.

Baker said firefighters from Eagle Creek, La Vernia, and both stations of the Floresville Volunteer Fire Department saved at least three homes and two businesses. An estimated nine acres of brush burned, with flames reaching heights of 15 feet, he said. The blaze was declared under control at 1:16 p.m.

Today’s weather conditions have prompted the weather service to declare a red flag warning for the Hill Country and much of South Central Texas until 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30. According to the warning, relative humidities are expected to fall into the teens. Gusty winds are forecasted out of the northwest, with speeds of 20-25 mph. Under a Red Flag Warning, people should avoid the use of open flames or any activities that might generate sparks, as accidental ignition has the potential turn into a wind-driven wildfire.
