NASCAR Buys Iowa Speedway

NASCAR announced on Wednesday that it has purchased Iowa Speedway in Newton. According to the announcement, the purchase was made as part of a commitment to “enhancing event experiences and fan engagement, as well as solidify the future of one of the premier racing and entertainment facilities in the Midwest.”

The 0.875-mile asphalt paved tri-oval designed by former NASCAR driver and Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace is located 30 miles east of Des Moines. The facility already hosts both the Nationwide and Camping World Truck series on a yearly basis, but has never hosted a Sprint Cup event. There are no plans to add the Sprint Cup Series to the Iowa Speedway racing docket.

“Iowa Speedway is a great entertainment facility with a very bright future,” NASCAR Vice President of Strategic Development Eric Nyquist said. “The facility has the support of the region, it’s positioned well in the heart of the Midwest, and year in and year out, it provides great short-track racing action for motorsports fans. NASCAR ownership will allow us to draw on the entire resources of our company.”

NASCAR has scheduled an event in Des Moines on Dec. 12 to reveal more specific details of the purchase and future plans for the facility.

The 2014 NASCAR schedule at Iowa Speedway includes a May 17-18 weekend featuring the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East versus West Challenge and the Nationwide Series, a Camping World Truck Series and IndyCar Series race weekend July 11-12, and a second K&N Pro Series East versus West Challenge on Aug. 1.
