Dorothy Mae Danysh Hartmann, 86, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 24, 2013, in San Antonio. She was born Sept. 13, 1926, to Joseph and Marciana Danysh in their home near Denhawken in Wilson County, Texas.

Throughout her life, nothing was more important to Dorothy than her family. She grew up on her family’s farm, making trips to San Antonio with her sisters when they became young women. One of those trips was to a Christmas dance in St. Hedwig, where she met Gilbert. They continued dancing together for more than 50 years, joining their friends for dances and lively card parties. After her retirement from civil service, Dorothy returned with Gilbert almost every week to the family farm, which became their country retreat. She also enjoyed reading, traveling, gambling trips, and spending time with their grandchildren. She loved to laugh, especially with her sisters as they conversed in Polish. For many years, all the grown children and their families gathered for dinner in their home almost every Sunday and holiday, knowing there would be something good to eat at one o’clock. She spent many hours cooking wonderful meals and baking for her family, never using a recipe. Her homemade bread was legendary among the grandchildren -- despite many attempts to imitate what we watched her do, the end result has never been duplicated. We have missed her cooking and her laughter for a while now, but her smile and sense of humor remained with her until the very end, as they will remain in the hearts and memories of those who knew and loved her, said the family. The family extends their gratitude to the entire staff of Christus Sister Mary Hospice Center for their comfort and kindness.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings Joe Danysh, Clarence Danysh, and Florence Danysh Muerer.

Dorothy is survived by her husband of 60 years, Gilbert Hartmann; their children, Karen Hartmann, Wayne Hartmann and wife Judy, Lori Hartmann Cline, and Mark Hartmann and wife Terri; grandchildren Leanne Luddeke Roseland and husband Eric, Tom Hartmann and wife Rochelle, Kenny Hartmann, Candyce Hartmann, and Shane Hartmann; great-grandchildren Drew Roseland and Halle Hartmann; sisters Virginia Danysh Valenta and husband Dan and Suzanne Danysh Jendrzey and husband George; brother Peter Danysh and wife Corinne; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 28, from 5-9 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in La Vernia.

A funeral Mass will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Ann’s Catholic Church in La Vernia.

Interment will follow in the Christ Lutheran of Elm Creek Cemetery in Guadalupe County.
