1945-2013

John Randall “Randy” Davenport, 68, of Friendswood passed away on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, in Webster. He was born on May 10, 1945, in Seagraves, Texas, to Thomas and Doris (Quattlebaum) Davenport. He was a resident of Wilson County for 15 years.

Raised in the oil fields of West Texas, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17, during which time he served as an electricians mate aboard the USS Luiseno (ATF-156), a fleet tug. While in the Navy, he deployed to the Mediterranean, where he took part in the salvage operation of a B-52 bomber that crashed off of Palomares, Spain, in 1966 while carrying four nuclear weapons onboard. Randy was also a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Randy was an electrician by trade, but was also an excellent shade tree mechanic and carpenter, doing most of his own automotive repairs and home-improvement projects. He was the classic strong, silent type, never a man of many words, but always willing to listen and answer countless questions of “Why?” and “How come?” from children and grandchildren. He was always concerned with others’ well-being over his own. But this was Randy -- always taking care of everyone else and not worrying about himself. His greatest joy in life was his family, followed by his love for God and country.

Randy is survived by his loving wife of 46-1/2 years, Sheilagh; children James, Heather, and Brian; grandchildren Ashley, Daniel, Micaela, Peyton, and Kyler; and many other relatives and cherished friends.

Visitation was held on Monday, Nov. 25, from 6-8 p.m. in the Jeter Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Friendswood.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel, officiated by the Rev. Chris Norton.

A private interment was held in the Houston National Cemetery in Houston.
