Ruth M. (Ostrowski/Oster) Schulze
Ruth M. (Ostrowski/Oster) Schulze died following an illness on Friday, April 19, 2013. Ruth was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on June 29, 1937, and moved to Texas with her family in 1947.
She attended several schools, completing at South San Antonio High in 1954. Ruth worked at various jobs, serving in the capacity of clerk, bookkeeper, and office manager until she became a full-time homemaker and pioneer in 1973, in St. Hedwig. In 1974, she, with a neighbor, created Citizens Against Fuel Adjustment (CAFA), a revolt against San Antonio City Public Service pass-through of huge arbitrary fuel costs on electric bills. CAFA sparked the escrowing of the excess charges, resulting in millions of refunds to ratepayers. She participated in construction of her home, doing carpentry, drywall, painting, and landscaping. When St. Hedwig became activated, she successfully ran as the first female of the first city council, and served several terms. Her efforts led to creation of a planning committee that still operates. The family relocated into semi-retirement outside La Vernia in 2002 and to Seguin in 2008.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Luther A. Schulze; daughter Stacy E. Dresch; grandson Nicholas C. Dresch; brothers Kenneth Oster and family and Donald Ostrowski and family; niece Marcia Schmitz; and in-laws and outlaws.
A graveside services will be held on Thursday, April 25, at 2 p.m. in the San Geronimo Cemetery in Seguin, with the Rev. Robert DeLong, MSF, to officiate.
