1927-2012

Thomas Lynnwood “Tommy” Clark went to be in the loving arms of his Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, at the age of 85. Tommy was born on March 10, 1927, to Walter Easton and Mable Ann “Mayme” Clark in Sweetwater, Texas.

Tommy quit school during World War II. He wanted to serve his country. He had brothers in the Marines, Navy, and Army. He joined the Merchant Marines. He got his training at Avalon, Calif. After completing his training, he shipped out on an oil tanker carrying oil and a load of P-38 airplanes bound for Pearl Harbor. The Merchant Marines were the suppliers of everything needed for all branches of the U.S. Military Services. They were the target of submarines and magnetic mines.

He traveled all over the world, including Vancouver, Canada, the Panama Canal, Aruba, Baltimore, Md., England, Geneva, Italy, Germany, Dakar-French West Africa, and Rotterdam, Holland. After the completion of his service in the Merchant Marines, he attended Harding Academy in Arkansas. While he was there, he preached at various Churches of Christ part time while attending school. He came back to Texas and preached at various Churches of Christ in San Perlita, West Columbia, and Victoria. He came to Seguin to be a full-time preacher at the Seguin Church of Christ, where he met his wife.

Tommy decided to work at a job and preach at small Churches of Christ part time in the area. He preached in Stockdale, Nixon, Luling, Waelder, Gonzales, Kenedy, Mathis, Schertz, Natalia, and the West End Church of Christ in San Antonio. When the Korean War broke out, he joined the Air Force. The Merchant Marines were not considered a part of the military while he was in the Merchant Marines. This was later changed. He got his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base. He was sent to Randolph Air Force Base, where he was assigned as a welfare specialist in the Chaplain section. His duties were to assist dependents of deceased Air Force personnel with their benefits.

He continued to preach part time where he was needed. He was discharged on Dec. 12, 1955. He worked at various jobs, selling insurance, and as a warehouseman for GBRA. Tommy got a job for the Atomic Energy Commission for four years, where he tore down the obsolete atomic bombs of the type dropped on Japan that helped to end World War II. While there, he helped build and service new atomic weapons. Medina Base where this was located was closed. He went to work for the U.S. Post Office in Seguin, where he worked for 18 years and then retired.

After retirement, he enjoyed trotline fishing. He was well-known for his knowledge of fishing and preparing the fish. He also enjoyed gardening and growing vegetables and flowers. He also enjoyed feeding the wild ducks and birds. Tommy loved people. He was always helping anyone who needed help, regardless of their ethnic origin, religion, and their station in life. He was a member of the Walnut Street Church of Christ. He loved the Lord and teaching everyone His Word. He was a lifelong Democrat because he felt they were for the ordinary people and they reflected what God teaches everyone to be. God teaches us to love one another and always be ready to help those in need. Tommy was a wonderful man. He was always smiling and happy. He never met anyone he did not like. Tommy will be missed by his family and friends.

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents; sister Florence Holt; brothers Walter E. Clark Jr., J.B. Clark, Medley Clark, and Delbert Clark; half-sister Winnie Vickers; a baby sister; and brother-in-law Elgin Adcock Jr. and wife Doris Faye.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ann; a daughter, Lynn Beicker and husband Davy of San Antonio; two grandchildren, Bryan and Lacey Beicker; brothers John Clark of California and Edward “Eddie” Clark of Minnesota; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a host of friends.

Visitation was held on Sunday, Nov. 18, from 2-4 p.m. in the Tres Hewell Mortuary in Seguin.

A funeral service was held on Monday at 1 p.m. in the Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with Tony Dominguez and Alan Tullis officiating.

Interment with military honors under the auspices of the American Legion H.U. Wood Post No. 245 followed in the San Geronimo Cemetery in Seguin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
