FLORESVILLE -- Connally Memorial Medical Center’s finances continue to improve; the hospital received a clean audit from Durbin & Co., LLP, during the Feb. 21 meeting of the Wilson Memorial Hospital District board.

The current assets of Connally Memorial Medical Center increased from $4.6 to $7 million. (See “Good numbers” for details from the report.)

“Viability is very stable,” Brandon Durbin of Durbin & Co. told the board members.

Patient service revenue increased from about $19 million last year to $20 million, as reflected in the current audit report.

A letter of governance was issued by Durbin, who explained that the firm is required to do so, regardless of the existence of discrepancies.

“There are no difficulties, there are no uncorrected misstatements, and there are no disagreements with management,” Durbin quoted from the letter.

“It was a very positive audit overall,” he said. “It was a clean opinion.”

Also during the meeting, the board approved amendments to the order calling for a May 11 election of board members. Early voting will now take place at Floresville City Hall, rather than the Wilson County Courthouse Annex. Polling places have been reduced from 16 down to eight. This follows the polling locations of the November 2012 general election.

Karl Hittle of Endeavor Healthcare, which manages the medical center, presented an update on the search for a new chief executive officer (CEO) to replace Jerome Brooks.

The search has been narrowed to three candidates who will interview in Floresville.

“I have spoken at length with all three individuals through phone interviews,” Hittle said. “I believe these three present the best options for our facility.”

The individuals hail from northwest Texas, Mississippi, and North Carolina.

Once chosen, the new CEO should begin sometime in May, Hittle said.

Brooks, during his report to the board, outlined some things to expect in the near future, including the acquisition of a telemedicine capability and the upcoming “Love Your Heart” health fair in the Floresville Event Center.

Telemedicine will connect doctors at Connally Memorial Medical Center with a neurologist in San Antonio, in real time, for the care of stroke patients.

“We are starting our telestroke coverage within the emergency department soon,” Brooks said. “The physician training starts on March 6, so all of the emergency department physicians will be here to start their training. The equipment has already arrived and we have been doing some IT testing, some staff testing on that equipment so ... hopefully we will be official to go live mid-March.”

The “Love Your Heart” health fair will take place on Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Floresville Event Center from 4-8 p.m. Blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol screening will be provided, along with a meal and a presentation by guest speaker, Heloise from the long-running “Hints from Heloise” column; reservations are required for the meal.

Also at the meeting, the board:

•Heard a hospitalist and physician update from Dr. Jim Brand

•Approved the purchase of a digital mammography machine for $238,000

•Approved the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) recruitment agreement for Dr. Jeffrey Faulkner.

Good numbers

Certified Public Accountants Durbin & Co., LLP, presented an independent financial audit of the Wilson Memorial Hospital District (Connally Memorial Medical Center) Feb. 21 to its board. The audit found:

•The District reported operating income in 2012 of $951,276 and an operating loss in 2011 of $1.8 million. Operating income in 2012 had a favorable increase of $2.8 million, or 152.1 percent over the operating loss reported in 2011.

•The District’s net assets increased in 2012 by $3.8 million or 53 percent; in 2011 the District’s net assets increased by $937,515, or 14.9 percent, compared to 2010.

•Net patient service revenue increased by more than $1 million or 5.8 percent in 2012 and by $538,235 or 2.9 percent in 2011, compared to 2010.
