FLORESVILLE -- Residents of Floresville will see a familiar face on the city council for the next year, as local business owner Eric Rodriguez has been appointed to fill the vacancy created when Johnnie Rene Gomez resigned in his quest for mayor.
The position of councilman, Place 5, had been vacant technically since Gomez resigned to run for the office of mayor during the November general election.
Since that time, Gomez had been sitting in council meetings until a memo from the Texas Secretary of State’s office advised the council that it was better to appoint a replacement for Gomez as soon as possible. The council then adopted a resolution Nov. 29 to appoint a replacement.
During the Dec. 13 regular meeting of the Floresville City Council, Councilman Sherry M. Castillo nominated Gomez to retain his seat and serve out his term, but her motion died for lack of a second.
Gomez stated during the meeting that he was under the impression that if he lost the election as mayor, he would be allowed to continue serving on the council.
Councilman Jim Miller congratulated Gomez on his service, but advised that in the spirit of the city charter, allowing that to happen would be like Gomez “having his cake and eating it, too.” Miller cited a charter provision which states that an officer must resign his position before seeking an office which would run concurrently with the one held.
After Castillo’s failed motion, Councilman Mario Morones nominated Rodri-guez, who ran against Morones in 2010.
“I believe that Eric is exactly what this council needs and is going to be a great addition,” Morones said after the meeting. “He is an honorable and hardworking family man. Plus, we need to have someone on the council who is younger and can provide insight into what younger families’ needs are. I have nothing but great things to say about him.”
The council voted 4-0-1, with Gomez abstaining, to appoint Rodriguez, who was subsequently sworn in by Mayor Diana Garza.
“I think we made the right appointment,” said Councilman John Guerrero. “Eric has always participated in and been vocal in the community. He has demonstrated character and integrity, which are key traits for a successful councilman.”
