FLORESVILLE -- The city council here is attempting to formulate a strategic plan for the future of Floresville. In the second of three daytime workshops, the Floresville City Council met for nearly 5-1/2 hours Nov. 27 with heads of all city departments and boards.

Among those making presentations before the council was Jesse Perez, executive director of the Floresville Economic Development Corp. (FEDC). Part of Perez’s remarks were devoted to ongoing commercial growth, including:

•A proposed bowling alley, which Eric and Lisa Rodriguez are planning to build on two acres in the Lone Oak Business Park near Angelica’s Mexican Restaurant on U.S. 181.

•A bank being built on the property between the Walmart Supercenter and the Connally Memorial Medical Center on U.S. 181. Other possible structures being considered for the two remaining pad sites include restaurants and hotels. Perez said the developer wants the FEDC to assist with water and sewer infrastructure, in exchange for 48 acres within the flood plain that the city could use for park land.

•Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union plans to expand its branch on U.S. 181, with groundbreaking planned for the first quarter of 2013.

•McDonald’s on U.S. 181 is about to undergo renovations. This project could precipitate talks between the city and Wilson County about making improvements to C.R. 301 -- located between C.R. 330 and Sutherland Springs Road -- which runs behind the property.

The council also received presentations from department heads such as City Manager Andy Joslin, Cyndi Nichols of the city permits office, and Comptroller Lara Feagins. Mayor Diana Garza said following the workshop that information gathered would be used in the strategic planning workshop Nov. 28. See related article, page 1A.

***In attendance: Floresville Mayor Diana Garza and councilmen Jim Miller, Mario Morones, John W. Guerrero, and Sherry Martinez Castillo; City Manager Andy Joslin, City Secretary Sherry Pollok, Comptroller Lara Feagins, Cyndi Nichols of the city permits office, and Executive Director Jesse Perez of the Floresville Economic Development Corp.

48 acres of flood plain land for a park for assistance in water and sewage. I'm not seeing the benefit. 48 acres is a lot cheaper than putting in sewage and water for a new development. And if our current infrastructure doesn't ... More ›

I'm good with the bowling alley. We need some entertainment around here but another bank. Don't we already have like 5? We need chili, Ihop, lowes, target and Starbucks.
