Wilson County Garden Day
Wilson County Garden Day is right around the corner! This seventh annual event takes place Saturday, March 2, at the Floresville Alternative Education Center, just off U.S. 181 in Floresville, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Plan now to attend this annual event to get plants and ideas for your garden, flower beds, lawn, or patio. The daylong event is fun for the whole family, with children’s activities, planting and wildlife seminars, and so much more. Sponsors of Wilson County Garden Day include the Wilson County News, 930 AM KLUP, Milberger’s Nursery, and the San Antonio Water System.
Children’s activities include Go Fish, Just Dig It, and Dive In -- play areas designed just for little ones -- along with Seed Card Bingo and Create a Recycled Bracelet. In addition, the youngest garden fans can make and take home Cheerio feeders and pine cone bird feeders; build birdhouses, sponsored by Home Depot; decorate pots and plant flowers; and make seed cards out of recycled paper.
The Floresville Alternative Education Center’s S.T.A.R.S. program will offer its annual plant sale, a fund-raiser for this service-learning program that willing students participate in during their own time. Buy your trees, shrubs, bedding plants, hanging baskets, and more, with proceeds benefiting the S.T.A.R.S. students and their projects. Veggie gardeners, stock up plenty of kitchen fare, and choose from a host of tomatoes -- Celebrity, Tycoon, Big Boy, and other varieties. The S.T.A.R.S. plant sale will continue Monday through Thursday, March 4-7, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tomato cages ($5) and other garden items will be available, too, including rain barrels for only $50 from “Dave the Barrel Man.”
Enjoy music by the “County Line Community Band” and a live broadcast of “Gardening South Texas” with Dr. Calvin Finch and Dr. Jerry Parsons on 930 AM KLUP radio. Shop for bargains at the Air Force Junior ROTC rummage sale, bid on silent auction items, browse a variety of vendors, and enjoy giveaways.
Seminars throughout the day will include “Pecans” by Larry Stein; “What Happened to Our Quail” with Ryan Darr, AWB; “Non-Native Snakes” with Dr. George Hill; “Growing Tomatoes” with Dr. Jerry Parsons; and “Beekeeping and Honey Production” with young beekeeper Bo Dewees of San Antonio, among other presentations.
Gear up for Garden Day by testing your plant knowledge on page 1D of this issue of the Wilson County News. The winner will receive a gift certificate to an area nursery or garden center.
The Floresville Alternative Education Center is located at 335 Alternative Lane.
