Graduation: Alexandria Butts is Floresville High School valedictorian
Alexandria Butts has been named the 2013 valedictorian for Floresville High School. Alex is the 18-year-old daughter of Devin and Alison Butts. She has spent her entire school career in Floresville public schools. With the exception of one class in first grade, Alex has had an all “A” report card from kindergarten through high school.
Alex is a member in good standing with the FHS Chapter of the National Honor Society and the Drama Club. She is president of the FHS Speech and Debate Teams and was a regional qualifier in UIL Speech and Debate for the past three years in a row and state alternate in Lincoln-Douglas competition this year. For her efforts in the classroom, she has received many awards, including the Outstanding Student of the Year Award for Pre-AP Biology, Pre-AP English I, Communication Applications, AP English III, AP U.S. History, and Spanish III. She has worked to maintain her No. 1 rank throughout her four years and achieved recognition as a Commended National Merit Scholar.
Alex has been a member of the Floresville tennis team since seventh grade and made the varsity team in the second half of her freshman year. She has earned recognition as Academic All District and has received multiple first and second team All-District awards in varsity doubles and singles tennis. She has also earned numerous medals at various tournaments throughout her career, including regional qualification the past two years. Alex and the members of her team earned the District Championship in the fall and the spring this year for the first time in 10 years.
When not busy with her academics, Alex is active in her church where she is a member of the Youth Group at the First Baptist Church of La Vernia. She has volunteered her time feeding the homeless in San Antonio through the Church Under the Bridge project and has spent time volunteering at the La Vernia Food Bank. She has also served as a recreation leader at her church’s kids’ camp and participated in various mission projects with her church, including remodeling churches and houses, picking up trash, and working with youth in the community. She also participated in mission initiatives in Canada and Israel and has served as youth intern at her church this past year.
In the fall, Alexandria has chosen to attend the Liberal Arts Honor College at the University of Texas at Austin, focusing on political science and pre-law.
