WIMBERLEY -- After mixed results at home and in the Wimberley tournament last week, the La Vernia Lady Bear volleyball team heads into its second week of pre-district competition with an even record of 4-4.

The Lady Bears started their season off with a match against Southwest. It went to five sets, but in the end, the Lady Bears took the win, 25-12, 24-26, 25-21, 21-25, and 15-12. Brooke Haliscak led the team with 24 kills, while Sara Hill pounded down another 17. Brianna Dear anchored the defense with eight digs, and Morgan Mikes racked up 33 assists. Haliscak, Mikes, and Kasey Reinen each had three serves aces as well.

Next on the list was Cuero. The Lady Bears hosted the Lady Gobblers last Thursday, and La Vernia rolled to a straight-sets victory, 25-14, 25-14, and 25-20. The team’s record was 2-0, and things were looking good heading into the Wimberley tournament.

The first match of the tournament was against Burnet, and the Lady Bears got right to work, winning 25-14, 25-16. Madison Towns and Haliscak led the way with seven kills and four kills, respectively. Mikes and Audrey Mayes combined for 13 assists, and Kiersten Muenster pulled up five digs. Mackinley Zimmerle had four blocks for La Vernia, and Haliscak had another 3.5.

The Lady Bears faced Comfort next, and suffered their first loss of the season, 22-25, 26-24, 22-25. The team came back strong against Canyon Lake, though, winning 25-22, 25-9.

The Lady Bears returned to competition on Saturday, but began with a 25-22, 25-16 loss to St. Michael’s. La Vernia then faced Hondo, winning the first set 25-17, but then dropping the next two, 25-22 and 27-25. Haliscak had 11 kills in the contest, and Reinen and Hill each tallied another 9, but it wasn’t enough to get past the Lady Owls.

The Lady Bears closed out their tournament appearance with a match against Uvalde, but came up a bit short, losing 26-24 and 25-23. Haliscak had nine kills in the losing effort, and Hill added four kills and four blocks. Mikes had nine assists, and Muenster led the team with five digs.

The Lady Bears were scheduled to be back in action this week, hosting Fredericksburg on Aug. 20 and Medina Valley on Friday, Aug. 23.
