LA VERNIA -- A mobile home on U.S. 87 south of here is a total loss, following a late-afternoon fire May 8. Firefighters with the La Vernia, Sutherland Springs, & Stockdale volunteer fire departments were called out at approximately 4:20 pm, according to Deputy Robert Shockley with the Wilson County Sheriff's Office. They arrived to find the single-wide mobile home engulfed.

The residents of the home escaped uninjured, Shockley said, adding that the Red Cross had been notified and was en route to assist them with accommodation or other needs.

The La Vernia EMS and La Vernia Police Department also attended.

Firefighters continued working to contain the blaze as of 6:20 pm, to keep the fire from spreading to several other mobile homes nearby. They will remain on the scene to douse hotspots and prevent the flames from reigniting.
