Emily Morehouse is the winner of the $500 Floresville Musical Club scholarship for 2013. She is the daughter of Brian and Theresa Morehouse. This is her scholarship essay.

With the increase in technological advances and interactive media, some argue that the arts are no longer a necessary element of humanity in the 21st century; but the arts are actually much needed for daily life. They offer an escape from the technology-filled, 21st century lifestyle, and that is something that is difficult to find.

Live concerts offer much more than a CD can. Instead of the listener sitting inside his house, listening to a CD by himself, he is with an audience that has a common interest; he is connected with everyone at that venue. Along with that connection, he is also linked to the music, which helps get away from the distractions of the everyday technological world. Live concerts offer an escape through the experience of live music and a common bond between the listener and the audience.

When looking at a piece of art on a computer or phone screen, there is no dimension in the work; texture that adds complexity is nowhere to be found. Sculptures, paintings, and drawings put forward much more than pictures on a computer screen. They are tangible objects. One can look at a piece of art and see the thought and depth put into the work by the artist. Studying the paint strokes and chisel marks on works of art such as these helps the viewer escape from the technological lifestyle.

With interactive media, humans can hold conversations with technology, but the computer-generated responses are set up. There are a limited amount of replies that can be said to questions, declarations, or exclamations made by humans. Interactive media does not stimulate the brain the way art does. There is nothing to interpret in interactive media; everything is set in stone. But when reading creative writing, the reader imagines the characters and gets to know their personalities as if the characters were real. The reader sometimes grows to love the character so much that he can create scenarios for the characters to live out. Creative writing stimulates the mind of the reader, which produces an imaginative outlet for the reader to get lost in -- a form of escape from technology.

Art is open for analysis and interpretation, whereas technology is not. Analyzing and interpreting art can distract a person from their technology-filled lives. Art has experiences that go along with it, but if one stays indoors with technology, that person will never have those experiences. Art has a place in the 21st century technological lifestyle because it is a way to escape that lifestyle, if only for a few moments.
