Statistically speaking: a look at Richmond International Raceway

April 22, 2014
After its first weekend off of the 2014 season, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returns to action Saturday night with the Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway. Two weeks earlier at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway, Kevin Harvick became the first two-time winner, eight races into the season. The seven different winners, so far, include Harvick, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards, Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch and Joey Logano. Drivers still winless on the season include Jeff Gordon, Clint Bowyer and Denny Hamlin, all three two-time winners at RIR, and Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart, both three-time winners at Richmond. Harvick won this race a year ago, while Edwards is the most recent victor in Sprint Cup competition at the track, winning the fall race at RIR last year.  (More)

Chase Elliott vs. Kyle Larson: future Sprint Cup rivals?

April 17, 2014
Okay, I’ll start off by saying that I’m willing to be the first to admit that I was wrong about that decision by Chip Ganassi to move Kyle Larson up to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for 2014 to replace the departed Juan Pablo Montoya in the No. 42 Chevrolet. Soon after the announcement was made last fall, I proclaimed that it was two early and that, perhaps, Larson would suffer the same adjustment problems suffered by Joey Logano early on in his Sprint Cup career. Logano has said publicly that he made the jump too early. Admittedly, I thought Larson was making the same mistake.  (More)

April 15, 2014
With his second win of the season coming Saturday night in the Bojangles’ Southern 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Darlington (S.C.) Racway, Kevin Harvick assued his spot in the 16-driver Chase for the Sprint Cup championship post-season, that is if he’s in the top-30 in points come the end of race 26 at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway in September. After his second win, Harvick climbed to 22nd in the standings, 68 points ahead of 31st.  (More)
Will one win get you in?

April 15, 2014
NASCAR’s new criteria for getting into the Chase for the Sprint Cup doesn’t completely diminish the value of points. After all, once slots are filled with race-winning drivers, the rest of the 16 driver/car field is to be filled according to the points standings. And, of course, there is the Chase spot reserved for the points leader after the Chase cut-off race at Richmond (Va.) International Speedway in September, race winner or not.  (More)
