Eagle Ford: Council updates building codes May 15, 2013, Section A: General News
May 15, 2013  STOCKDALE -- Code enforcement may have been back-burnered for a while in the city of Stockdale, but city Fire Marshal David Rice has been involved actively with updating the fire codes and the fee schedule. These actions are needed for Code Compliance Officer James Stewart, who also serves as city marshal, to enforce the ordinances to ensure the safety of citizens.  May 15, 2013  SAN ANTONIO -- Two arrests have been made in a cattle theft that occurred on or about April 16. Cameron Hoagland, 19, was arrested May 10 for felony theft of livestock for his alleged role in a cattle theft incident in Bexar County. His alleged accomplice, Malcolm Brietzky, 19, of Adkins, turned himself in to the Bexar County Central Magistrate’s office; he also was charged with felony theft of livestock. May 8, 2013  SHINER -- Gov. Rick Perry has highlighted Texas’ strong jobs environment, which allows employers from all industries to risk their capital and see a return on their investment. The governor spoke at Shield Tactical, which sells firearm-related gear and training services, and credits Gov.  May 1, 2013  SAN ANTONIO -- At the AACOG board of directors monthly meeting on April 24, the board took action and elected a new board chairman and vice chairman. Bexar County Commissioner Kevin Wolff was elected to serve as board chairman. Guadalupe County Commissioner Jim Wolverton was elected to serve as board vice chairman. They both began their tenure effective immediately, and will remain in their positions for the remainder of 2013. They were sworn into office by the 2012 Board Chair Katie N. April 24, 2013  AUSTIN –– The Railroad Commission of Texas -- the state’s top energy agency -- has a new $6 million grant program to help companies replace their older forklifts and medium- and heavy-duty diesel vehicles with ultra, low-emission natural gas- and propane-fueled equipment. The grant program, which will produce significant air-quality benefits, is funded by the Texas Emissions Reduction Plan through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. April 17, 2013  POTH -- Assembling for a regular meeting on April 9, the Poth Planning and Zoning Commission spent the majority of its time addressing the concerns of citizens over a proposed zoning change requested by the Wiatrek brothers. If granted, this would allow the proposed Sandra’s Ridge subdivision to be built on the property currently zoned as residential.  April 17, 2013  LA VERNIA -- As members of the La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department continue to tour area businesses as part of their pre-planning process, the need is becoming increasingly apparent that a local fire code is needed. At the April 11 meeting of the Wilson County Emergency Services District (ESD) No. 1 board of commissioners, both organizations pledged to begin tackling this topic at the ESD’s May 9 meeting. April 17, 2013  LA VERNIA -- Members of the public are invited to attend the Pennies for the Persecuted Symposium Monday, April 29, in La Vernia, as Holocaust survivor Inge Auerbacher shares her inspiring story of survival. The Navarro and La Vernia school districts are partnering for this amazing opportunity for the community to hear history firsthand. The public is encouraged to attend a symposium at 6:30 p.m. in the La Vernia Independent School District (ISD) auditorium on Bluebonnet Drive, next to the junior high campus. April 3, 2013  AUSTIN -- The Railroad Commission has adopted new rules to encourage Texas operators to continue their efforts at conserving water used in the hydraulic fracturing process for oil and gas wells, even though hydraulic fracturing and total mining use account for less than 1 percent of statewide water use, with irrigation, municipalities, and manufacturing making up the state’s top three water consumers.  April 3, 2013  The Texas Rural Water Association has named Deborah Scogin as the Office Manager of the Year and Alan Riedel as Water Operator of the Year at the annual convention held in Austin on March 22. Both are long-time employees of S S Water Supply Corp. in La Vernia, and a first for the association to name two employees from the same system as annual award winners. These two outstanding individuals were recognized above thousands of employees among 172 member water systems. “It was a joy to see these two folks being recognized for their hard work and dedication,” said General Manager Herb Williams. “They are an example of the hard-working professionals that I get to work with every day!” (More) Eagle Ford: Police find meth during traffic stop March 13, 2013, Section A: General News
 March 13, 2013  FLORESVILLE -- After having been certified in narcotics detection for just a few weeks, the Floresville Police Department’s K-9, Rikkert, is being credited with helping officers find methamphetamine during a March 7 traffic stop at the corner of B and Third streets here. As a result, 27-year-old Blake Lewis Burk of Floresville has been charged with possession of less than 1 gram of a controlled substance in Penalty Group 1.  February 27, 2013  Jason Royer of Royer’s Reptiles has proposed a compromise in the wake of the Wilson County Commissioners Court’s recent decision to restrict certain non-indigenous snakes being kept as pets in unincorporated regions of the county. Royer’s recommended amendment to the commissioners court’s Nov. 28, 2012, ordinance was one of the topics discussed during the commissioners’ Feb. 25 meeting. February 20, 2013  STOCKDALE -- As the junior high and high school students of the Stockdale Independent School District (ISD) enjoy the new cafeteria opened at the end of the 2011-12 school year, the Stockdale ISD board of trustees is discussing the next project. This is why the park’s new ownership reached a deal with the Floresville Electric Light & Power System’s (FELPS) board Jan. 30, which will pave the way for installation of three-phase service at a reduced rate.
