Quiet Valley Ranch
The Kerrville Folk Festival at Quiet Valley Ranch,
nine miles South of the Texas Hill Country resort community of Kerrville, has begun the announcement of an exciting 2013 festival schedule for its 42nd annual event. Once again this legendary songwriter¹s festival will run for 18 straight days, beginning Memorial Day weekend from Thursday, May 23 through Sunday, June 9, 2013. Season Ticket Packages and day
tickets are on sale now.
Festival Producer Dalis Allen has put together another stellar schedule.
Here¹s a short sampling of artists being planned to appear. The first
weekend will include Joy Kills Sorrow for their first appearance at
Kerrville. The second weekend brings back Dala, Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary fame; and David Broza back after a long absence. New is Max
Gomez, back is Trout Fishing in America, The Steel Wheels, AND Bill
Staines. Third weekend will bring us The Roys whose awards and accolades just keep rolling in. New to Kerrville The Stray Birds, joining us again Birds of Chicago and Ray Bonneville. Many more to be revealed in the next couple of weeks.
As usual, the 2013 Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Competition for
emerging songwriters will be held on the first Saturday and Sunday of the festival (May 25th and 26th), from 1 to 4PM. From the almost 800 entries,
32 finalists have been selected to perform in this prestigious annual
competition, hosted by Steve Gillette and Festival Founder Rod Kennedy.
Several former New Folk finalists and winners include Lucinda Williams,
Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, David Wilcox, John Gorka, Jimmy LaFave, Tish
Hinojosa, BettySoo, Tom Prasada-Rao, Danny Schmidt, Jonathan Byrd, Tom
Russell, Ray Bonneville, Steve Earle, Hal Ketchum, Robert Earl Keen and many hundreds of others.
Held each year since 1972, the Kerrville Folk Festival is the longest continuously running festival of its kind in North America. Over the
years it has become known internationally as a Mecca for singer
songwriters of varying musical stylesŠ a place where those just beginning to develop their skills have the opportunity to play their music
alongside those who are masters. Emerging songwriters as well as teachers are drawn to the festival¹s many learning opportunities, such as the 33rd
Annual Songwriters School, the Roots / Blues Guitar Workshop, Harmonica
Workshop, Capo Workshops, a Music Law Panel Discussion, and the 12th Annual Professional Development Program for Teachers.
There's truly something for everyone at this festival, from camping, campfire jam sessions, concerts and activities for kids, Ballad Tree
song sharing sessions, Hill Country bike rides and canoe trips on the Guadalupe to Sunday Folk Song Services, Saturday Shabbat Services and much more. This is one musical celebration that must not be missed! A complete festival schedule, information and tickets can be found at
www.kerrvillefolkfestival.org or by calling the festival office at (830)257-3600. Ticket prices range from $25 to $40 depending on the particular day, although you can save by purchasing your tickets early online.

The 8th annual Wahl Face the Day Tour is heading to San Antonio’s Summer Art & Jazz Festival from May 31-June 2, 2013. The San Antonio Summer Art & Jazz Festival is a premier summer event for art, music and cuisine and Wahl will be there with a 30-foot mobile barbershop making sure the men of San Antonio look sharp. Master Barbers from Wahl, a leading manufacturer of facial hair trimmers, will help guys put their best face forward by defining a style that’s right for them. While in town, Wahl will also be on the lookout for guys with the right stuff, as in facial hair, to name the Man of San Antonio.
“The majority of men continue to sport facial hair,” said Jeff Bovee, senior product manager for Wahl. “This year, the 5 o’clock shadow, otherwise known as stubble, is sprouting up on jaw lines across the nation, and guys want to know how to maintain it. That’s where Wahl comes in. With a little effort, education and the right tools, all men are capable of achieving a great facial hair style.”
The Wahl Face the Day Tour travels the country with a team of Master Barbers who give guys free trims and shaves equipped with the latest grooming tools from Wahl. They are determined to help men achieve their best face yet. In addition, a visit to Wahl’s mobile barbershop also helps support men’s health. For every trim or shave performed on the tour, Wahl will donate $1 to ZERO, a nonprofit leading the fight to end prostate cancer, the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men. The organization conducts free testing through a mobile testing program and educates patients, families and those at risk.
Wahl Man of San Antonio
Wahl will be on the lookout at the festival for men with the gift of grooming written all over their face. The guy with the best stache, beard, goatee or anything in between will be given the title Wahl Man of San Antonio and for his efforts will be awarded a $500 cash prize and a Lithium Ion + Stainless Steel Trimmer. This man will go on to compete against 14 other facial hair worthy delegates for the top spot of 2013 Wahl Man of the Year and an additional $1,000. Enter by visiting the Wahl mobile barbershop. Guys who can’t make it to the event can enter online at wahlnation.com.
Complete information about the tour, including expert tips, grooming advice and official contest rules, can be found at wahlnation.com.

Those who recall former Wilson County Judge Martha (Davis) Schnabel will be interested in knowing that her life and career have been highlighted in a newly published book. “Bryant: A Creek Indian Nation Townsite” is 214-page book about the Okmulgee County, Oklahoma, old Creek Indian Nation Town of Bryant and the public schools that were once were in operation there. Judge Schnabel was a 1944 graduate of Bryant High School.
The narrative portion of the book describes many of the key events that took place at Bryant from the late 1800s up until the population dwindled and the town finally ceased to exist. With the intent of capturing the look and feel of day-to-day life in one of the many town sites that were incorporated back when land in the Oklahoma Indian Territory first became available for outside settlement, many of the event mentioned in the narrative are then beautifully illustrated through the use of a non-stock collection of over 300 photographs and other graphic forms. The author, Mike Martin of Visalia, California, is himself a former resident of Bryant. For more information, contact The Fowble Press at 559-802-3092 or mmartin 11875@comcast.net and ask about ISBN 978-0-9638279-1-3.
In addition, some may also want to know that the author is scheduled to deliver a presentation entitled “An Evening in Old Bryant” in Henryetta on Tuesday, June 4, at 6:30 p. m., just a few miles from where the Town of Bryant was located. His narrated presentation is a graphically illustrated history of the town, which was brought into being in the Creek Nation before Oklahoma became a state of the Union. The story begins back when tribal land was made available for outside settlement and ends in the mid-Sixties, with a specific focus on the years when many of those who lived at Bryant ended up moving away from the area as the local economy declined.
Sponsored by the Henryetta Historical Society and Territorial Museum, the program will be held in a meeting room at the First United Methodist Church at 1212 Lake Road in Henryetta. For more information, call 559-802-3092.
